“Being a leader is a thankless job…”
<imported from my old blog – excerpt>
There is no exact definition for a leader, as different people would put it in different ways. However, I believe that a leader, as Sir Paul would put it, is a catalyst for change. He starts and initiates, and helps his people grow along with him. A leader is one who inspires other people to do the same. A leader serves other people – he is a servant-leader – not the other way around.Just as the title says… and I quote (from Ms. Meryll Yan), “Being a student leader is a thankless job…” It’s true… it really is. And despite that, I believe it is still worth pursuing. It gives one a sense of fulfillment and growth.
I also believe that everyone has an amount of leadership in them, and that it just differs in how the person acts and develops that potential.
Going back to leadershop being thankless… to some, it might not be really obvious who should really be given the credit for something. There are leaders out there who work hard and do what they do best. However, some, are just “leaders” by position. I know of people who are really leaders and I salute them. In fact, they serve as my inspiration. They help me grow as a person. But sadly, and I am really sorry to say that I also know of some who do something small and get credit for everything. Having high grades is not enough to be a leader. After all, a leader is not determined by his/her grade. I know of many who live up to their high academic standing/credentials, but I know of some who don’t (some people may agree with me on this). This is a sad reality that we might have seen, in our dealings with people around us. I know, I may not be a really good leader, but one thing’s for sure – I do not take credit for something I did not do, or did but not really do.
It might not be proper for me to think this way, and I often feel that I am selfish to do this. But I can’t really say that I am selfish for thinking this way if it’s reality, and it is what we know is true. I am a human being after all: and I can’t help but feel painful and bothered by these people (who get credit/position but might not be deserving). Just know what you did and did not do…
I believe that we are free to choose our actions. As leaders, and even as persons, we have the responsibility to know and take responsibility for our actions. Being given positions and responsibilities, it is our job to fulfill our duties. In order to do so, we must have a vision set to be achieved, and direct our actions toward that goal. And the most important thing that I learned is that you must love what you do – that is to serve – and everything will flow naturally.
And this prayer summarizes it all. (I like this prayer very much. I learned it while I was running under a political party
) It is the Prayer of Generosity by St. Ignatius Loyola
Lord, Teach me to be generous
Teach me to serve you as I should
To give and not to count the cost
To fight and not to heed the wounds
To toil and not to seek for rest
To labor and ask not for reward
Save that of knowing that I do Your most Holy will.
I really hope that we could all be leaders, even in our own little ways.

Somewhere, sometime, something like this was said by someone…
“Courage is changing the things that we can change. Patience is accepting those that we can’t. And wisdom is knowing the difference.”
You’re wise =)
