American Idol 7 Thoughts

Disclaimer: This post are only my thoughts and comments on the matter. Some may agree with me and some may don’t. I do not intend to pick a fight with anyone; but arguments, and comments, whether to agree or disagree, are very much welcome. :)

After watching the final showdown between Cook and Archuleta, I can finally say that this is the best time for me to share my thoughts on the whole show. I admit they are both great in their thing, but for me, Cook is better “by a mile” (as Simon would usually say).

During the start of the season, I watched most of the contestants’ performances. (I missed some of them, I had classes before and were not able to drop by YouTube to watch.) I’ve had a few favorites, and by the time it was the top 24, I already chose my bet. It’s David Cook for the guys and Carly Smithson for the girls. I also liked performances by Ramielle, Chikizie, some of Michael Johns and maybe Brooke and David A. After watching several weeks of AI7, most of the time, “America” voted correctly in my opinion. However, there are just weeks when you’d see that it’s the fan base that’s working for the contestants. If you have a small fan base, then you’d be out. I guess this is where popularity comes.

Despite having weeks where I felt that someone should have gone home instead of the other, I still fervently waited for each week to come to watch the episodes. I had hoped these people were not voted off during their elimination weeks: Michael, Carly, and Brooke. Up until the last performance show, Syesha had been one of the toughest girls. Being almost always in the bottom three, she always stood up and showed everyone what she’s capable of. Until her elimination, I feel that she has grown A LOT. In fact, I like her more than David A. Sorry to say. But of course, it’s Cook FTW!

But you can see in Cook’s disposition how frustrated he is during the last performance night. If I were in his place, I’d feel the same way. This night, Archuleta did perform better than him in some aspect, BUT… (I leave you to complete the sentence).

The judges are becoming more frank (or franker) as the weeks pass, and you can see how some of them are hard on some of the contestants while soft on the rest. Some say that the judges are only voicing out what the producers of the show want, but who knows. Its probable. Of course the aim of the show is profit. When you take that into account first and foremost, then obviously the one who will be “pushed to win” (or constantly complimented although the performance was not that good) is the one they like. Most likely (IF profit is the primary concern).

Somehow, in the entertainment industry, even in the Philippines, contests are usually commercialized. Usually it is the profit that comes first, before talent (when talent should be the one that comes first). Well, who cares, some might say. But I’d say – Just think about it.
