Is 2012 the end?
Rumors about the upcoming apocalyse in 2012 have been spreading wildly across the Internet. Some say that the Mayans, known for their high-level knowledge in mathematics and astronomy, predicted this day to come. Howevere, according to scientists and Mayan culture experts, it is not true, nor a correct interpretation.
Everything started from the ‘Long Count’ method developed by the Mayans, where
- One day – kin
- 20 days – uinal
- 360 days – tun
- 7,200 days – katun
- 144,000 days – baktun
and a whole span of the whole calendar count is called the Great Cycle, which spans around 5,126 years. The calendar notation is written as (baktun).(katun).(tun).(uinal).(kin). The beginning of each cycle starts with 13 (baktun).0.0.0.0, and goes on through 1-12. Experts believe that 13.0.0.0.0 is what the Mayan’s perceive as the creation of the world, which corresponds to approximately 11 August 3114 BC in the Gregorian calendar. Calculating everything, the Great Cycle end is set on 21 December 2012 AD.
With the clock still ticking, many have started rumors about it. Movies have also been created during all this hype. Checking out various pages on a Google search is pretty exhaustive of the different interpretations of the same thing, the Mayan Calendar.
By 22 December 2012 (13.0.0.0.1) , it is either the beginning of a new world order, or the end of the world. Many believe that our world will undergo a significant transformation – a rebirth, as we go through a new age. That is what I’d like to believe, personally. It will not come as easy, and as experts say, the road to 2012 is rough. No one really knows what will happen then.
