Wordcamp Philippines 2009

I attended my first Wordcamp event today at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati. It was an information-filled session with lots of freebies. Too bad I wasn’t able to get some shirts either from Firefox nor from Wordpress. Nonetheless, it was something I learned much from.

Here are some photos (taken from my 2MP phone camera), without people. I must admit I was still a bit shy, but at least I got to talk to some people and network for a bit. :)

I got some new ideas on my future projects. I just hope I have enough time and drive to get to them. Here are some of my take-aways from the sessions earlier:

Content is KING

  • BuddyPress is actually a social network in a box.  Utilizing the power of Wordpress MU and bbPress, it’s just like we’re making our own Facebook! What really caught my eye, rather ears, or maybe both, is: BYOTOS (Bring your own terms of service) unlike Facebook, who “owns” whatever we upload. I will definitely look into this.
  • Some useful plugins: RSS Footer plugin for protecting content on feeds, All in One SEO Pack for your SEO needs, WP Security Scan for scanning the Wordpress installation for vulnerabilities, WP Super Cache for reducing server load by generating static files from the dynamic content of the blog, among others.
  • There have been a lot of new stuff and improvements especially in Open Web, such as SVG open image and video. Imagine having to embed image and video you can manipulate on the fly using Javascript without degrading quality. Talk about innovation. There are more stuff in the Hacks.Mozilla blog.

Overall, this is an enlightening event for me. Though I thought that having an option for either a more overview type of lecture or for the more technical aspect of Wordpress would be better. The crowd was diverse, and there are those who prefer to sit down listening to the new improvements and latest news, while there are also those who also would like to know more about the inner workings or tweaks that can be made within the code. That’s just me, but as I said, it was a very useful day for everyone.
