Tips: Customizing Facebook Home Page Views
Four days ago, Facebook introduced the new default home page views. There are 2 views that you can see upon logging in to your account:
- Live Feed
- News Feed
The rationale behind the News Feed is to update you with the most interesting and talked about things for the past day, to ensure that you can keep up with the latest and “relevant” news about your friends and family, especially when you’ve been away from the Internet for a long time. The Live Feed on the other hand is what it is – a live feed of the news and updates as they come.
The default setting of the feeds, however, is only limited to your top 250 friends. I can almost hear you say, ‘what!?’ Wait, hang on for a while. There is a way to fix it. If you want to be updated with everyone in your friends list, simply do the following:
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Edit Options.
- Change the Number of Friends count to a maximum of 5000.
As is the usual case, the change was greeted by both raves and rants. I, for one, prefer the old setup, where you can only see the status updates. I’m not that into knowing whether who became friends, or who added this fan page or what. I don’t need to know everything. As they say, Facebook is becoming more and more of a stalker-friendly site, which I can agree to, to some extent.
For those of you who want to revert the “old look,” there’s also a way to just see the status updates. Refer to the menu shortcuts on the top left of the screen and simply follow the following steps:
- Click More. Now, the list becomes draggable.
- Search for Status Updates and drag it to the top of the list.
- Click Status Updates to activate the view.
- Select Home, or just reload the page to see the changes.
Voila! It’s done. You’re now back to your old view. Happy Facebooking!

My Projects
Thanks for posting this! I've been dying to find out how to tweak my Facebook settings so that the homepage wouldn't look so cluttered. Like you, there are also certain updates I don't want to see, especially those regarding Facebook applications like "Friends for Sale" and all those other games. They get really annoying after a while.
Thanks, too, for mentioning that bit about the top 250 friends. No wonder I can't see the updates of a friend who just joined Facebook recently.

Oh, and one more thing. (Sorry if I'm posting 2 comments on a single entry.) At first I couldn't find the "Edit Options" link, and after searching through Facebook's Help I came across this solution contributed by a Facebook user.
"Apparently, the edit option link doesn't show up unless you've hidden someone or something from your wall. So on any news item, move your mouse pointer over the item and the 'Hide' link will show up on the right side of the news item. Click on 'Hide' then scroll down to the bottom. The edit options link is on the right in the little blue bar, across the 'Older Posts' link. When the window pops up you can change the maximum friends allowed on your feed from 250 to 5000. And you can 'unhide' your friend also, save changes, and you're all set. You have to be in Live Feed for this to work."

Thanks for your comments, and for this valuable information. Somehow, things are not always visible and accessible.
