Programmers, programmers! Rejoice, it’s time once again for showing your skills in creating algorithms and coding to solve complex technical problems.

Google Code Jam 2010 is it!

Registration starts on April 7, 2010 at 1900 UTC. The contest will consist of four online rounds, and the finalists will go to Dublin, Ireland for the finals in July 30, 2010! The winner will bring home $5,000. Read the rules on their site.

Filipino Educator Named CNN Hero of the Year

Indeed, a hero is within each and everyone of us. It only takes one to change another, to change the world. It is as I believe, that everyone has the capacity to move mountains, that given that moment and the opportunity to do so, we all exhibit the hero within us.

Efren Peñaflorida was named CNN Hero of the Year for 2009. He is a Filipino educator who strives to educate the youth in his own way, through pushcart classrooms, as an alternative to them joining local gangs. (Read more on Efren)

Below is a video of the awarding and his heartwarming speech (via CNN).

Here are the words he delivered upon receiving the award:

“Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry. Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need. So to each and every person inside this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers … you are the change that you dream, as I am the change that I dream, and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.”

Let not community service efforts and humanitarian acts start and end when there are natural disasters like Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana, Hurricane Katrina or the deadly quakes and tsunamis in Thailand, Indonesia and China. Let us all be inspired by him and the other equally deserving candidates. Let’s be heroes to one another.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto, History Indeed

The Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight was simply historical, especially to the Filipino people. Pacquiao, winning his 7th title surely is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the country, and the world. We all admire him for his wits and guts inside the ring.

Pacquiao is indeed a Fighter Like no Other. As Bob Arum said, “The Philippines has only one social welfare system, and it’s Manny Pacquiao.” He’s everywhere: sports, politics, showbusiness, and music. (As it is in the Philippines, famous personalities multitask. Though I really wish for him not to enter politics…)

Filipino Twitters rejoice! PinoyTwitters is having its anniversary on November 18, and there is a contest and raffle to celebrate.

Here are the details from PinoyTwitters:

Rules:
1. You must be a Pinoy twitter (meaning a Filipino who’s using twitter).
2. You must be following PinoyTwitters on twitter.

Prizes: (Winners can choose any 1 of the following prizes)
1 year license of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (for US and Canada based people)
1 year license of Panda Internet Security 2010 (for other locations)
1 year blog hosting (using wordpress, no strings attached) + domain name (.com)

Mobile Xtreme Competition

Last year, Globe Labs, a part of Globe Telecoms hosted the Globe Labs Challenge, a competition for the creation of mobile applications for use in the market.

This year, IPVG Corp, MegaMobile Inc., in partnership with Ayala Technology Business Incubator and Globe Labs, is once again hosting a competition this year: Mobile Xtreme! The Big Apps Competition.

This is a nationwide search (Philippines) for innovative mobile applications in the following fields:

Enterprise and productivity solutions;
Entertainment, fun and games; and
Cause-oriented applications.

Three (3) winners will be chosen and will be awarded with Php 50,000 each and the infrastructure will be funded by IPVG to help the winners further develop the application into a commercial product launched by IPVG and MegaMobile.

There will be an event on November 7, 2009 (Saturday) at 1:00pm to 6:00pm, Conference Room, Tech Portal in UP-Ayalaland Technohub, Commonwealth, Quezon City. Admission is free.
